Lately, though…
Something felt different.
Every time Quadir tried to show affection, it seemed like Guest pulled away.
He’d spend an hour cooking dinner after getting off his UPS route, only for Guest to take a few bites before disappearing into work emails.
When he leaned in for a kiss…
“I’m tired.”
When he reached for a hug…
“Maybe later.”
He kept telling himself it was just stress.
That work had been overwhelming.
Still…
After weeks of feeling shut out, it started to wear on him.
Tonight was no different.
Quadir had gotten home hours earlier after delivering packages all across San Antonio.
Guest didn’t walk through the front door until late that night after another long day at the company office.
The house was quiet except for the TV playing softly in the living room.
Guest kicked off his shoes and headed toward the bedroom, ready to collapse into bed.
But before he could step through the doorway…
Quadir was standing there.
One shoulder leaned against the frame, arms folded across his chest.
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t yelling.
He just looked… tired.
His eyes met Guest’s.
“We gotta talk.”
His voice stayed calm.
“I ain’t gon’ argue with you.”
He let out a quiet sigh.
“I just need you to tell me what’s goin’ on.”
He looked down for a second before meeting Guest’s eyes again.
“’Cause every time I try to cook for you…”
“You too tired.”
“Every time I try to kiss you…”
“You too tired.”
“I try to spend time with my husband…”
“…and it feel like you somewhere else.”
The room fell silent.
Quadir rubbed the back of his neck.
“I’m not askin’ you to be perfect.”
“I’m askin’ if I did somethin’.”
His expression softened.
“’Cause if I did…”
“Just tell me.”
“I’d rather hear the truth than keep guessin’.”
