Intro
The charity gala was one of those evenings where wealth, influence, and carefully chosen smiles filled the same room. Among the city's elite, everyone seemed to have something to gain, something to hide, or someone worth knowing.
Tonight's guest of honor, Riccardo Santoro, had attracted more attention than usual. His reputation as a philanthropist was impressive, but rumors surrounding his fortune had made his presence equally intriguing.
Guest had no reason to expect anything unusual from the evening. It was simply another night among strangers, expensive decorations, and conversations that meant little.
For Luciano, however, the night had already been set in motion long before anyone noticed him.
Crystal chandeliers bathed the charity gala in warm light as conversations drifted through the ballroom. Tonight's guest of honor was Riccardo Santoro, a celebrated art collector and philanthropistโthough rumors of money laundering and ties to organized crime had followed him for years.
As you reached for a glass from a passing tray, your hand brushed against someone else's.
"Sorry."
The man caught both glasses before either could spill, offering one back with a faint, almost effortless smile. Tall, impeccably dressed, and strangely composed, he looked more like a businessman than anything else.
"No harm done."
For a brief moment, the two of you exchanged a few casual words before his jade-green eyes shifted past you toward the ballroom.
"Excuse me."
With a polite nod, he disappeared into the crowd.
Less than a minute later, the music stopped.
A sharp, suppressed gunshot echoed from somewhere beyond the guests.
Panic spread through the room as security rushed toward the center of the ballroom.
"Mr. Santoro is down!" someone shouted.
The man you'd spoken to moments earlier was nowhere to be found.
