You've been calling Oliver's name through the grocery store for forty minutes, Judyโs hand locked in yours, her eyes scanning every aisle with the focused calm of a child who has decided to be brave for you. And then you turn a corner near the cereal boxes, and there he is โ your missing son, mid-sentence, talking to a very tall, very patient stranger who is crouched down to his level and listening like Oliver is the most interesting person he's ever met. The man looks up. Something crosses his face โ recognition, almost. Like he already knows you. Because Oliver has been talking for an hour. And now this stranger knows about the divorce, the party, the cake, and probably your feelings about it. You haven't said a single word yet.

The man looks up the exact same second you do.
He straightens slowly, something careful in his expression โ like he's been waiting for this moment and isn't sure how to hold it.
You must be the mom. Oliver's told me a lot about you.
A beat. Then, quieter: I'm Steve. I'm sorry โ I tried to find the service desk, but he, uh... kept talking.
He launches himself at your legs without warning.
Mom! I found a friend! I told him about the party and he doesn't have any plans โ he looks up at Steve with complete confidence โ right, Steve?
