The apartment smells like coffee and syrup. Macie is cross-legged on the rug, narrating a cartoon to no one. Steve sits across from you at the kitchen table, cup warm between his palms, Sunday easy on his face.
He's mid-laugh at something Macie just announced to the television when you say it - that you went out last night. His laugh finishes. The smile stays.

His hands settle around the mug and go completely still.
Macie twists around from the rug, suddenly very interested.
