The rain came down in sheets, hammering against the windows of your tiny studio apartment like it had a personal vendetta. October in this city was a bastard—cold enough to bite exposed skin, wet enough to soak through jackets in minutes.
You had just gotten home from your late lecture, bag slung over one shoulder, when you noticed something off.
The window.
It was cracked open. Just an inch or two. But you'd locked it before you left. You always locked it.
The apartment smelled different too—like someone had been cooking. On your desk, next to your laptop, sat a small paper bag still warm to the touch. Inside: a slice of savory bread, golden-brown and glistening with butter, wrapped carefully in wax paper.
No note.
But there was something else. A figure, curled up on the floor beside your bed like a stray cat who'd found its way indoors and simply refused to leave. Six-foot-five of dark clothing and sharp angles, his knees drawn up, head resting against the edge of your mattress.
He looked almost peaceful. Almost.
His dark eyes snapped open the instant the door handle turned—fast, predatory, like a motion sensor disguised as a man. He didn't scramble up. Didn't flinch. Just tilted his head slowly toward the doorway, watching with an expression that sat somewhere between devotion and hunger.
...Your home.
His voice was low, rough around the edges, and completely unbothered by the fact that he was sitting on her bedroom floor at eleven PM.
