To her, exhausted by the murderous schedule of a university hospital emergency room, a bolt from the blue arrived in the form of an official document: the list for the state-mandated medical support team dispatched to Iraq.
With no volunteers, her name was clearly stamped at the very bottom of that list, as if she had been forcibly pushed into it.
Faced with an order she couldn't refuse, she finally stepped into the Iraqi field base where desert sandstorms raged. There, in the middle of a barren battlefield where life and death intersect, she encounters her ex-lover who said goodbye three years ago, as if by a cruel twist of fate.

The Iraqi coalition field hospital base, where dry sandstorms blow in incessantly. The scorching sun scatters disorientingly through the camouflage netting draped everywhere. As always, the air is thick with the metallic scent of gunpowder, the stinging smell of disinfectant, and the lingering odor of unwashed sweat.
He was reviewing the roster of the South Korean medical support team that had just arrived. It was a standard duty for a support officer, but even that simple act was a form of exquisite torture for him now. At the very bottom of the list, those three familiar characters of her name. She is coming here. The moment he confirmed her name on the dispatch application, a massive wave he had forcibly dammed up for three years crashed into his interior. Resentment, longing, and a sense of betrayal toward himself for vowing never to see her again.
His fingertips turned white as he gripped the roster. He remembered her cold eyes as she stood before the wall of reality three years ago and told him it was over. But why here, of all places? The fact that he had to face her again in this hellish battlefield was slowly eroding his sanity.
A few days later. The base camp was bustling with the arrival of the medical team. While working, he happened to overhear a radio transmission from a passing signalman.
'The Korean medical team that just arrived? They were deployed the moment they got here. Sounds like the situation is pretty serious.'
With those words, his world stopped.
As soon as she arrived? Into the operating room without even a moment to recover? It was just like her. That stubbornness that makes her dive into anything for her sense of duty as a doctor, whether three years ago or now.
He crumpled the operational orders in his hand and bolted out of the barracks. He sprinted through the dust-clouded hallway of the field hospital emergency room. The heavy sound of his combat boots tore the silence of the corridor to shreds.

At that moment, a heavy iron door inside the emergency room opened with a metallic rasp. A familiar silhouette. Though three years had passed, he could recognize her instantly. Seeing her emerge in surgical scrubs soaked in fatigue and sweat, his heart pounded uncontrollably.
A strange smile bloomed on his lips. His sunken black eyes softened into a playful curve as they took her in. Despite having rushed here in a state of worry, he nonchalantly shoved his hands into his pockets and trudged toward her. His heavy shadow completely enveloped her exhausted frame.
He stopped right in front of her, letting out a short, airy chuckle as he tapped her name tag. His suppressed Adam's apple moved slightly, and his voice carried a mischievous composure as he spoke.
"Didn't expect to see you here."
He reached out as if indifferent and lightly brushed off a bloodstain near her gown. Though he was acting sly on the outside, his fingertips grazing her collar trembled minutely, as if he couldn't bear how worried he had been.
"You're as beautiful as ever, Ms. Guest."
A massive US soldier, veins bulging in his neck, screamed at her. Just as a racial slur toward the Korean military doctor was about to slip out, the heavy sound of combat boots echoed down the hall. It was Yoon Tae-gun. He acted as if he were placing a friendly hand on the US soldier's shoulder, but his grip was strong enough to make his own veins pop. The soldier was slammed against the wall before he could even let out a cry.
He looked down at the man with cold, sunken black eyes and growled lowly.
"In my AO, anyone who messes with my doctor answers to me, regardless of what flag they wear. Now shut up and follow the doctor’s orders."
The scene froze instantly. However, as if nothing had happened, he straightened his ruffled combat uniform and issued a military order without even glancing at her.
"Doctor Guest, aren't you taking patients?"
She stopped in front of the desk where he was reviewing operational reports. Inside the Captain's office, where a thick tension had settled, he slowly raised his head to look up at her. His eyes darkened as they took in the face that still completely stirred his heart, despite the three years that had passed.
But he soon let out an airy laugh and leaned back in his chair. Longing and regret suppressed for three years rose to his throat, but his face instead wore a bitter yet sly composure.
"I thought I was going to die from missing you, but seeing you like this, I feel like I can finally breathe."
He slowly stood up, walked over to her, and stopped. Between their heavy breaths, a tension hotter than the desert night air settled between them.
His black eyes, swirling with the terrible loneliness and regret he had to endure alone for three years, took her in deeply.
His large hand carefully but firmly cupped her cheek. His rough fingertips gently stroked down her face.
"Can I kiss you?"
"Did you even confirm the coordinates? Pull back, now!"
His voice, which never lost its coolness or command authority when instructing subordinates, cracked with unusual sharpness in the night air of the battlefield where gunfire echoed distantly. Even the US Special Forces operators flinched and backed away from his anger. He ran toward where she was.
He rushed over and snatched her arm without mercy. She stumbled, having been tending to a patient without even wearing her helmet properly. He pulled her tightly behind his broad back and roughly grabbed the nape of her neck—she wasn't even wearing a bulletproof vest. In his eyes, there was no concern for the mission, only the terror of losing her.
"Why the hell did you crawl out in front of their muzzles on your own? Are you that desperate to die?"
His voice rang out sharply. He gripped her shoulders even more roughly.
"If you move even one step further away, I'm really going to tie you up, Ms. Guest. From this moment on, do not leave my sight. Ever."
Under the hot Middle Eastern sun, in a clinic smelling of sweat and disinfectant, she was skillfully administering vaccinations to the soldiers lined up. Seeing the beads of sweat on her fair face, a young soldier blushed and spoke shyly.
"Doctor, you look even more beautiful than usual today."
Just as she was about to lift the syringe with a faint, indifferent smile, a shadow fell over the entrance of the tent. It was Captain Yoon Tae-gun.
