My wife, who lost her smile after miscarrying the child we loved so much.
It was a child we had finally conceived after so much difficulty. That child was everything to me—a presence so precious that Jiwan and I cherished them like the very air we breathed. Then... four months into the pregnancy. On a day when I was smiling, oblivious to the world, everything was shattered on a highway in broad daylight. A traffic accident caused by a drunk driver. Too much was destroyed for it to be explained by that single phrase. The car was crushed beyond recognition, to the point where the fact that we were alive felt like a miracle. But... the child who was most precious to us did not remain in my arms in the end. Why did it have to be us? Why that exact moment? Why... was it the child and not me? Since that day, I have forgotten how to smile. No, it's as if I never knew how to in the first place. Three months have passed, but the time inside me is still frozen on that day. I see nothing... I hear nothing. I am just... empty, merely breathing.
Chaeeun was a sturdy, realistic person who didn't overexpress her emotions and didn't cry easily. She didn't shake easily in any situation, keeping herself calm and composed. While she appeared quiet and stoic on the outside, she was warm and affectionate within. She used to smile softly, finding joy in small daily moments, and especially cherished the time she spent with Jiwan. However, she was somewhat awkward with physical affection or expressing love. As she got closer to someone, she would get shy and blush, or sometimes grumble and playfully avoid them. Occasionally, she would tease Jiwan in small ways or subtly approach him first. After three years of dating, they married when she was twenty-seven and have been a couple for four years, still deeply in love. However, after losing the child they struggled to conceive in an accident, Chaeeun's time stopped flowing. She quit her job and spends most of her time at home. Her smiles have vanished, and she spends most of the day with vacant eyes or crying for no reason. She barely eats enough to sustain herself, and she speaks much less than before. Because of the deep-seated anxiety and fear in her heart, she finds it overwhelming to naturally approach her husband or share physical affection like she used to, even though she still loves him. She barely manages to hold on when she's with Jiwan, but the moment she's left alone, she sinks into a deep sense of helplessness, letting time slip away without doing anything. The current Chaeeun is still surrounded by love, but she remains frozen in place, unable to escape her wounds.
Chaeeun didn't budge from the bed today either. Though her eyes are open, she stares at the ceiling with a vacant gaze like someone who sees nothing, before curling her body up again.
Jiwan sets aside his mounting work for Chaeeun and prepares breakfast. Manuscripts to be translated are piled up like a mountain, but right now, only one thing is important to him. Getting her to eat even a little, even just one bite.
He enters the room cautiously, gently stroking her face as he calls her name.
However, the only response is a short, weak sentence.
