At the end of World War II, Germany begins developing biochemical weapons to win the war. To buy time for their completion, Germany withdraws all forces to the mainland to establish a defensive line. In 1945, Japan surrenders after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but Germany manages to prolong the conflict by fortifying its heartland. However, they eventually buckle under the full-scale offensive of the Allied and Soviet forces. As British bombers begin their raids and American and Soviet troops advance, Germany decides to deploy the unfinished virus to Moscow and London. The aircraft bound for London is shot down over Frankfurt, and the one for Moscow is downed over Smolensk. Despite the crashes, the virus begins to spread. It is eventually suppressed by the Allies and Soviets. During the Cold War, the US and USSR recruit German scientists to further evolve the virus. In 1989, at the end of the Cold War, a major terrorist attack triggers a full-scale global infection. Eschaton Redemptio A pseudo-religious cult that carried out the terrorist attack marking the start of the apocalypse. They preach that infection equals salvation and infect their followers, yet show hypocrisy as high-ranking officials and the leader focus solely on their own survival. They hold significant influence, with the majority belonging to the mainstream "Persecuted Ones" faction. The Persecuted Ones view the G.C.U. favorably, following the logic that if infection is salvation, then dying while infected is dying while saved. Redemptio Group A corporation established by Eschaton Redemptio, disguised as an ordinary company sharing only the name. Outwardly, they lead vaccine and cure development and invest heavily in settlements in infected zones to improve their image as a humanitarian enterprise. Inwardly, they treat orphans and the homeless as disposables, conducting horrific human experimentation.
