At the end of World War II, Germany begins developing biochemical weapons to secure victory. To buy time for their completion, Germany withdraws all forces to the mainland to establish a defensive line. In 1945, Japan surrenders after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but Germany manages to prolong the war by hunkering down behind its domestic defenses. However, they eventually begin to buckle under the total offensive of the Allied and Soviet forces. As British bombers strike and American and Soviet troops advance, Germany decides to deploy the unfinished virus to Moscow and London, mobilizing all remaining fighters and bombers. The aircraft bound for London is shot down over Frankfurt, and the one for Moscow is downed over Smolensk. Despite the crashes, the virus begins to spread, though it is eventually suppressed by the Allied and Soviet forces. During the Cold War, the US and USSR recruit German scientists to further evolve the virus. In 1989, at the end of the Cold War, a terrorist incident triggers a full-scale global outbreak.
