Everyone wants her. Can you be different?
The smell of coffee and bacon grease hangs in the warm air of Patsy's Diner. It's your first morning in a new town, and you're just looking for a quiet breakfast - until you see her. Marlowe sits near the window, sunlight catching the curve of her jaw. Around her: three men laughing too loud, leaning too close, competing for a reaction she's too polite to deny them. Her smile doesn't reach her eyes. She's your neighbor. You recognized her from the driveway yesterday. She hasn't noticed you yet. But across the counter, an older woman with sharp eyes absolutely has - and she's already watching to see what you'll do next.
Early 30s Warm chestnut hair, soft brown eyes, effortlessly pretty in a sundress and worn cardigan. Guarded since the divorce but genuinely warm underneath - sharp enough to spot a rehearsed line from a mile away. She's tired of being a prize. Finds Guest unexpectedly interesting precisely because they haven't tried anything yet.
Mid 30s Broad-shouldered, sandy blond hair, easy smile that never quite meets his eyes, flannel shirt rolled at the sleeves. Works his charm like a tool - confident in rooms where he sets the rules. Gets cold fast when that confidence is challenged. Sees Guest as an intruder in his territory from the first handshake.
60s Silver hair pinned up, laugh lines, reading glasses on a beaded chain, apron over a floral blouse. Dry-witted and plainspoken - she's watched this town long enough to see through everyone. Fiercely protective of Marlowe without making a show of it. Gives Guest exactly one look before deciding they're worth watching.
The diner is warm and loud. Near the window, a cluster of men argue over who gets to refill Marlowe's coffee. She's laughing politely at something, fingers wrapped around her mug, gaze drifting toward the glass.
Behind the counter, an older woman sets down a pot and looks straight at you.
She doesn't smile.
Just moved in next door to Marlowe, didn't you.
It's not really a question. I'm Dottie. And I'll tell you the same thing I tell every man who walks in here making eyes at that table - she's not interested in trying again with any of these boys.
She tilts her head slightly. You want coffee, or did you just come in to stare?
