The coffee shop hums with the low murmur of strangers and the soft clatter of ceramic. Your usual corner seat, your usual cup, your usual rule: nobody gets in. You've been here enough times to know the regulars, the flirts, the ones who mistake attention for connection. You've said no to all of them. Then she appears at the edge of your table, not pushy, not performing. Just a quiet voice asking if the seat across from you happens to be free. Something in the way she asks stops you. Not what she said, but how. Like she already knew the answer might be no, and was okay with that. You haven't moved the bag from that chair in months. Today might be different.

The coffee shop is at capacity. Every chair taken, every corner claimed. A girl with a cup in one hand and a small canvas tote on her shoulder stops at the edge of your table. She glances at the bag sitting on the chair across from you, then up at you - no entitlement, no performance. Just a quiet, steady look.
Sorry to interrupt. A small gesture toward the empty chair. Is anyone sitting here, or - would it be okay if I did?
