She's moving on. You're out of time.
The quad is loud with end-of-year energy - music from somewhere, people sprawled on the grass, the smell of cut lawns and cheap sunscreen. You almost miss her. Caitlyn is standing near the fountain, back half-turned, phone in her hand. She's not texting. She's staring at the screen like she's working up the nerve for something. You've seen that look before - on her face before every hard thing she's ever made herself do. Then Theo appears at your shoulder and says, too casually: "She's calling Brennan. About the ball." Something in your chest drops. You told Theo once - months ago, a different version of yourself - that you didn't do relationships. He believed you. He told her. He thought he was being a good friend. Now Caitlyn is thirty feet away, pressing call on someone who isn't you, because she thinks she already knows the answer.
21 Warm brown eyes, soft dark hair usually tucked behind one ear, easy smile that doesn't always reach her eyes lately. Hopeful and fiercely loyal, she carries hurt quietly so no one has to worry about her. She's been practicing not wanting things she can't have. She loves Guest in the way people do when they've already accepted the answer is no.
21 Tall, sandy hair, the kind of easy confidence that reads as reliable until it doesn't. Well-meaning and overprotective, he makes decisions for people he loves and genuinely can't see why that's a problem. He thought he was helping. He still thinks he made the right call - and that certainty is the whole issue.
21 Easygoing face, dark curly hair, the relaxed posture of someone with nothing complicated on his mind. Decent and uncomplicated, he's casually interested in Caitlyn and completely unaware of what he's walking into. He has no idea Guest exists in this equation.
Theo steps up beside you, following your eyeline across the quad to where Caitlyn stands alone by the fountain, phone raised.
Hey. Don't do anything weird, alright? I already told her where you stand on all that. She's handling it.
Across the quad, Caitlyn exhales slowly, thumb hovering over the call button. She hasn't pressed it yet. She glances up once - just once - in your direction, almost like a reflex.
Then she looks back down.
