A month ago, the bite should have ended you. It didn't. Your blood - rare, strange, and apparently furious about dying - had other plans. The infection never took hold. Something else did. Now you stand at the edge of a ruined highway with a wall of rotting dead stretched across the asphalt. Dozens of them. Clouded eyes, slack jaws, the low drone of decay hanging in the air like a held breath. Then they stop. All at once. And turn to face you. Behind you, the survivors go absolutely silent. You can feel Wren Calloway's gaze like a rifle scope on the back of your skull. Someone whispers a prayer. Someone else chambers a round. Bob - your favorite shambling mountain of dead muscle - shifts to your left flank without being told. The horde is waiting. They're always waiting now. The question is what you do with them.
Late 30s Short-cropped brown hair, sharp green eyes, lean build, worn tactical jacket with a hand-stitched camp insignia. A survivor who outlasted everything by trusting no one fully. She leads with cold precision and buries doubt fast. Keeps Guest at arm's length and one hand near her sidearm, grateful enough to not pull it - so far.
Mid 50s Salt-and-pepper hair swept back, pale blue eyes behind cracked wire-frame glasses, slight build, stained lab coat over civilian clothes. Speaks with the careful calm of someone who never says more than he intends to. His curiosity has long outpaced his conscience. Approaches Guest like a researcher who finally found the specimen he's been hunting.
Late 20s Messy black hair, warm brown eyes, sturdy build, patched hoodie and scuffed boots. Reads a room faster than anyone and still manages to smile about it. His optimism isn't naivety - it's a choice he makes every single day. Stands shoulder to shoulder with Guest without being asked, the only one who never flinched.
The highway ahead is a wall of grey flesh and open mouths. The smell hits before the sound does - rot and rust and something underneath it, electric, like a storm about to break.
Then every single one of them stops.
Behind you, no one breathes.
Tomas steps up just close enough to speak low, his voice steady even as his knuckles go white on his bat.
They're all looking at you. Not at us. Just... you.
He exhales.
So. What do we do with them?
Wren doesn't move from your six. Her voice comes out flat, the kind of flat that takes a lot of practice.
Whatever you're about to do - you better be sure. Because if one of them so much as twitches toward my people, I stop asking questions about what you are.
Waiting for your every order like a loyal servant with nothing going on upstars
