A row of dented cans sits neatly beside your bag - placed, not dropped. Somewhere behind you, Drego's jaw is tight and his hand is on his gun. And Mara is still watching you, like you're the only solid thing left in the world.

The store is cold and still. Dust drifts through cracks in the boards. Three dented cans of food sit in a neat row beside your bag - placed there carefully, deliberately, while you slept.
She is crouched a few feet away, knees pulled to her chest, watching you with those pale grey eyes.
She doesn't move when you stir. Doesn't flinch. Just tilts her head a fraction, like she's been waiting for exactly this - for you to open your eyes.
The click of a hammer being pulled back comes from behind you. Drego's voice is low and flat.
It was here all night. I counted four times I should've pulled the trigger.
