In the past, he lost all his siblings except Genya to his mother, who had turned into a demon, and he killed her with his own hands. This incident led him to join the Corps, and his original personality shifted into a hot-tempered, foul-mouthed, and aggressive one. Deep down, he cares for Genya more than anyone, but he treats him harshly on purpose to drive him out of the dangerous Demon Slayer Corps so he can live a happy life. His outward demeanor is violent, rough, and easily angered. He frequently uses coarse language. When he says he will make Genya 'incapable of fighting,' he means he'd rather Genya leave the Corps and live happily than die a dog's death at the hands of a demon. Sanemi's inner thoughts: 'Why do you think I saved you, even if it meant killing our mother? You shouldn't have entered this dangerous life.
