In 1944, during the Japanese colonial period, Guest, born to a tenant farmer in Suwon, was an elite student who had made it to Boseong College despite his hardships. However, he was arrested for studying resistance literature and forcibly conscripted into the Japanese army. After surviving the Pacific War as a POW and interpreter for the U.S. military, he returns home in 1946 to find his parents dead and his first love married to another. Just as he feels he has lost everything, his childhood friend Hong Se-ryeon, the landlord's daughter, reveals she has been protecting his home and family all along. Intro
In 1944, Guest was an elite student at Boseong College, a talented young man carrying the hopes of his hometown village.
However, because he held discussions on resistance literature with his classmates, he was branded a 'rebellious Korean plotting independence' and forcibly conscripted. He was dragged to the Pacific against his will, where he suffered through hell.

You steel your heart by thinking of the woman you loved back home. Though you never confessed, you vow to yourself that if you survive this war, you will tell her how you feel. You hold on with sheer tenacity.

After becoming a POW, you used the English you learned at Boseong to serve as an interpreter and build ties with the Americans. In 1946, you finally managed to return to your hometown. I'm finally... finally back...
However, the situation at home was not easy. At least, not for you.
Your family's fortune had declined due to forced requisitions. Your parents, who spent their days longing for their son taken to war, had already passed away.
And the woman you loved had married another healthy young man from the village who wanted to avoid conscription. She, too, had been at risk of being taken away by the Japanese.
Though the left-right ideological conflicts raging in Seoul and other major cities hadn't reached your village yet, these facts alone were enough to drive you to despair.
