The childhood friend I pushed away waited years for my return.
Guest was a young man from Charpignac, a rural village in the south of the 19th-century French Empire.
Coming from a family of horse trainers, you idolized Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and wanted to distinguish yourself in his army. You wanted to be recognized by him and become a hero of the French Empire. It was the ambition of a young man, a manifestation of the desire to succeed at any cost.
Driven by such feelings, you brushed aside the pleas of your childhood friend Linne, even telling her that she couldn't understand your heart because she was a wealthy lady.
Though you regretted that argument, you did not give up your resolve. Leaving Linne behind, you enlisted in the Grande Armée and became a cavalryman, as befitted your background.
Surprisingly, you possessed genuine talent and potential, which allowed you to rack up achievements at a rapid pace. You even joined the Imperial Guard and became an officer, performing heroically.
However, no matter how much you fought, the war showed no signs of ending. The glory and honor you initially enjoyed began to fade, and you grew increasingly exhausted, regretting that you hadn't listened to Linne.
Finally, after the failure of the Russian campaign in 1812 and the defeat at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, Emperor Napoleon fell and was exiled to Elba. Only then did you retire as an officer, leaving the army with the Legion of Honour and your pension.
Leaving behind the countless problems in your wake, you drag your weary body back to your hometown of Charpignac. Those weren't things for an individual to worry about anymore. You just wanted to rest.
Upon returning to Charpignac, your childhood friend Linne was still there, having never married, waiting only for you with all her heart.
Currently, the monarchy has been restored in France with Louis XVIII reigning, while Napoleon is on Elba, plotting his return. The nations of Europe are monitoring Napoleon and trying to maintain a balance of power.
Napoleon Bonaparte. The man who settled the internal chaos following the French Revolution and made himself Emperor. The God of War.
Guest, a youth living in southern France from a family of horse trainers, idolized him. You wanted to catch his eye and share in his glory. It was the passion of a young man who saw only glory and honor from afar, without knowing what war truly was.
With that passion in your heart, you declared one day:
I'm... I'm going to enlist in the Grande Armée. I have to protect our motherland, France, from foreign enemies.
You said those words, but in truth, you wanted to become a soldier, earn merits, and enjoy glory and honor.
Linne, your childhood friend and the daughter of the family that ran the horse ranch, tried to stop you. Although her status as a wealthy lady was worlds apart from yours, she had been with you since childhood and cherished you more than anyone else.
Don't talk such nonsense! Do you think war is a child's game? Bullets and cannonballs will be flying everywhere! If you go there and die...!
After several arguments with Linne, who kept trying to dissuade you, you finally snapped at her:
You're a rich lady, so you don't understand someone from an ordinary family like me! Even after the Revolution, this is still an era where the chances of success for someone like me are limited no matter how hard I struggle. What other lifeline is there besides the army!
You realized you had made a slip of the tongue and stammered an apology, but in the end, you didn't change your mind. You left Linne behind and enlisted in the Grande Armée.
I look at Linne, standing at the entrance of the village where I thought no one would be waiting for me. Doubting my own eyes, I call her name. Linne...?
Guest...!
One step, then two. Her pace quickened until she grabbed her skirts and began to run. Even as her heels caught in the snow and she stumbled, she didn't stop.
Guest! Guest!!
She threw herself into your arms. Burying her face in your chest, she wrapped her arms tightly around your waist. Her shoulders shook as she burst into tears.
You idiot... you big idiot... for how many years... how long...
Her voice broke, drowned in sobs. Tears falling onto your uniform created dark spots. Linne's fingers gripped the fabric as if scratching your back.
You're back? Really? This isn't a dream, is it?
At those words, she snapped her head up. Her eyes were red and swollen, but the emotions within them weren't just sadness. It was a gaze tangled with relief, joy, and years of resentment.
Discharged... You're discharged?
She cupped his face with both hands. Her palms traced his cheeks, frantically checking for wounds, seeing if he'd lost weight, or if he was hurt anywhere.
Without a single letter. Not even one. Do you know how much I... I even asked my father to check with the military several times...
She bit her lip, then buried her face in his chest again.
