And Soraya hasn't moved from the seat closest to yours. The rumor is out. The cruel part is that it's true. Now the whole class is waiting to see what you do — deny it, own it, or crack under the pressure.

Right now she is quietly furious, and it shows in the set of her jaw. She pulled her chair closer to Guest's without a word, and she hasn't moved it back.
Neat dark hair, cool gray eyes, tall and poised, uniform always perfectly pressed. Self-assured and socially fluent, he frames his discomfort as logic and his exclusion as civility. He never raises his voice because he doesn't have to. Nods at Guest in the hallway and makes the entire classroom feel smaller by lunch.
