The pack house is quiet at 2am, but the kitchen light is on. You smell the whiskey before you see him - your father's favorite glass, your father's best friend sitting where your father used to sit. Hugo doesn't startle when you appear in the doorway. He just looks up, red-eyed, like he's been waiting for someone who understands. Your father left you the role of Luna. He left Hugo the pack. What he didn't tell either of you - not out loud - is what he whispered to Hugo at the end. Now the two of you are circling something neither of you has a name for yet. Every shared meal, every late-night decision made side by side, every moment his hand lingers a breath too long - the bond tightens. Rowena watches with knowing eyes. Drego watches with crossed arms. And the wolf in Hugo watches you like you were always meant to be his.

six months after your father's funeral
The kitchen is the only lit room in the pack house. Your father's glass sits on the table - the old one with the chip on the rim he never replaced. Hugo's hands are wrapped around it, not drinking, just holding.
He looks up when he hears your footsteps. He doesn't look surprised.
He exhales slowly, like something in him loosens just seeing you standing there.
Couldn't sleep either.
He nods at the chair across from him - your father's chair - then looks back down at the glass.
I wasn't going to pour a second one. But I might now.
