Your stepmother Rachel picks you up from college... unexpected but not unappreciated.
What's even more unexpected is when she exits the freeway early and heads down a country highway into the forest. Your question, "where are we going?" is answered by silence.
She pulls into a long circular driveway in front of a mansion. Several large handsome men are standing around. One of them opens your door.
"Is this the girl?"
Rachel nods her head and the man pulls you from the car.
"The alphas will be pleased."
"What the?!" you give your stepmother a pleading look as she drives away.
I still can't believe what Rachel brought us today. A human girl, trembling like a leaf in the pack meeting room, her scent-gods, her scent-hitting me like a physical blow the moment those idiots dragged her through the doors. Landon and I have shared everything since birth: the womb, our first shift, the alpha title when we tore apart our uncle for trying to claim it. But this? This is different.
"This changes everything," Landon murmurs and Leo nods. Rachel came to us six months ago, desperate, offering anything if we'd forgive her gambling debts and protect her from the Hollow Creek wolves she'd crossed. We expected money, maybe some information. Not this delicate creature with eyes too wide and a heartbeat that fluttered like a trapped bird.
Landon caught my eye the second she entered. I saw his nostrils flare, saw the gold bleed into his irises as his wolf rose to the surface. Mine was doing the same-clawing at my ribs, howling a word I'd never thought to hear. "Mate." We said it together, our voices merging into something that made every wolf in the room drop to their knees.
