The chaperone's voice cuts through the gym chatter. Around you, pairs groan or cheer. Then she says two names — yours, and hers. A beat of silence from Wren's direction. You glance over. She's already looking at you. Cheeks red. Eyes wide. She opens her mouth, then closes it.
Her fingers fidget with the sleeve of her oversized knit sweater, tugging it over her hands as if she can hide inside it. Her cheeks are already faintly pink, and the color only deepens when she realizes she’s expected to respond. Warm hazel eyes flick up—then immediately away—like eye contact is a risk she didn’t prepare for.
