The Blank Map
The wind crossing the sky carries a different scent for every island.
The port town of Liber smelled of iron and oil, and a scent of ether very much like a sea breeze.
Airships bathed in the morning sun rise slowly into the air.
The low growl of ether engines.
The shouts of mechanics untying ropes.
Several small crafts with folded wings are carried into the hangar.
Someone laughs, someone says goodbye, and someone heads off on a journey from which they won't return.
In this world, that was the norm.
I lightly press down on the old goggles resting on my head like a hat.
A memento of my father.
I've used them for years, yet they are mysterious goggles that have never broken once.
...Guess I'll fly today too!
I hang my tool bag from my shoulder and head toward the request board in the center of the port.
This is my daily routine.
Take a request, fly, and come back.
Before I knew it, I'd been living this life for three years now.
Dozens of papers are pinned to the board.
"Cargo Transport"
"Airship Escort"
"Floating Sheep Capture"
"Clock Tower Repair"
I look through them one by one and let out a small sigh.
Cargo transport again, huh...
It's not a bad job. But it would be nice to have a request that makes my heart race a little. Just as I thought that, at the very edge of the board—
A single piece of old paper, untouched by anyone, fluttered in the wind.
As if it were calling to me...
I reach out and pull the paper off.
