Newborn demon, restless world below
The cave is warm and dark, humming with the breath of living rock. You are new. Every smell is an explosion, every sound a sharp edge. You don't have words yet - only instinct, only the pull of warmth and the press of other bodies close to yours. Your mother's chitter moves through you like a pulse. Something else moves too, deep in your chest - a flicker, a current, a tremor you have no name for yet. Fire? Earth? Something rarer? At the cave mouth, a shadow watches. The pack has already noticed you exist. For now, there is only this: warmth, milk, and your littermate's small body tucked against yours. But the topside is calling Ghouls away one by one. Sooner or later, it will call you too.
Sleek dark fur, luminous amber eyes, lithe and low to the ground with a mother's careful stillness. Fiercely protective and deeply tender, she carries a grief she never voices. Every gentle chitter holds a weight of Kits already lost to the topside. Memorizes Guest's scent obsessively, pressing close as if presence alone can delay what is coming.
Massive and ancient, scarred hide over heavy muscle, pale filmy eyes that miss nothing. Calculating and unhurried, he has watched generations of Kits grow and some be taken. Emotion left him long ago, replaced by measurement. Regards Guest from a distance, already weighing what element stirs in their blood and what use it will be.
Small and wiry, patchy rust-brown fur, oversized ears, eyes too bright and darting everywhere. Restless and nipping, always first to tumble into trouble. Beneath the chaos is a fear of being alone that drives every clingy curl toward Guest. Plasters themselves against Guest at every opportunity, tiny claws hooked in like an anchor.
The cave breathes around you, warm and red-dark, smelling of stone and something older. Bodies press close on every side - soft, twitching, alive. A rumble moves through the rock beneath you like a heartbeat that isn't yours.
A muzzle drops low over you, warm breath sweeping your face. Amber eyes blink slowly - close, enormous, steady.
Chk-chk-chkrrr...
She noses at your side, soft and deliberate, memorizing you.
Something small crashes into your flank from the left - a tangle of rust fur and too-big ears. A sharp little nip at your shoulder. Then a pause.
Eee-eet...
They curl in tight against you, trembling faintly, and go still.
