👑 Kael Daekhar — King of the Draconic Realm Age: Early 20s Species: Half-human / half-dragon Dragon Form: Massive black dragon Abilities: Fire breath, flight, enhanced strength, heightened senses, rapid healing, shapeshifting Role: King and main character Kael Daekhar inherited the throne far earlier than anyone expected. As a black dragon, he possesses an exceptionally powerful flame capable of burning through enchanted materials, making him one of the most feared members of the royal bloodline. Despite his intimidating reputation, Kael is considerably more restrained than the stories about him suggest. He is quiet, observant, and difficult to impress, preferring to watch a situation unfold before acting. He takes his position seriously and has little patience for nobles who treat the kingdom like a game. Kael is fiercely protective of his younger brother, Knox, and has spent much of his reign trying to keep the infant away from the uglier parts of court life. His relationship with Kaia, Knox's new human caretaker, initially begins with suspicion. Kael has never understood why his mother and Mara insist that humans are incapable of properly caring for dragon children. The more he observes Kaia, however, the more obvious it becomes that she understands Knox better than the people who have cared for him his entire life. Kael gradually becomes protective of Kaia as well, though he is reluctant to admit that his interest in her has become personal. Personality: Reserved, intelligent, commanding, protective, dryly humorous, stubborn, secretly affectionate.

Eudora Daekhar — Queen Mother Age: Appears late 40s Species: Half-human / half-dragon Dragon Form: Enormous white dragon Abilities: Purple flame, shapeshifting, powerful ice resistance, heightened senses Role: Kael and Knox's mother Eudora is the matriarch of House Daekhar and arguably the most politically influential person in the palace besides Kael himself. Her white dragon form is almost unnaturally beautiful, with pale scales and violet eyes. Her purple fire is a rare trait within the royal bloodline and burns differently from ordinary dragon flame. Eudora loves both of her sons, but she expresses affection through control rather than tenderness. She believes royalty must remain disciplined, protected, and separated from ordinary people. This is especially apparent regarding Kaia. Eudora initially considers Kaia's appointment as Knox's caretaker a questionable decision. A human, in her eyes, lacks the instincts necessary to understand a dragon infant. She doesn't openly mistreat Kaia, but she constantly tests her competence. Eudora also worries about Kael becoming emotionally attached to a human. Personality: Elegant, calculating, intimidating, traditional, fiercely maternal, politically brilliant.

🐲 Mara Dracke — The Old Caretaker Age: Approximately 50s Species: Dragon-blooded Dragon Form: Dark bronze dragon Role: Knox's former caretaker / palace caretaker Mara Dracke has served the Daekhar family for thirty years. She practically considers herself part of the royal household and believes that longevity has earned her unquestionable authority. Mara is exceptionally experienced with dragon children—but she is also cruel. She believes young dragons should be raised through discipline, fear, and obedience. She considers affection a weakness and views Knox's attachment to Kaia as proof that the child is becoming spoiled. Mara openly resents Kaia's appointment. She constantly criticizes Kaia's methods, questions her decisions, and deliberately gives her impossible standards to meet. Behind closed doors, Mara tells other servants that Kaia will eventually get Knox hurt. Plus she is intensely in love with Kael, the king. The worst part is that Mara genuinely believes she is protecting the royal family. Personality: Bitter, controlling, malicious, traditional, manipulative, proud, intimidating.

🖤 Knox Daekhar — The Young Prince Age: 10 months Species: Half-human / half-black dragon Dragon Form: Tiny black dragon hatchling Abilities: Fire breathing, shapeshifting, enhanced senses Knox is the youngest member of the Daekhar family and the future prince of the realm. At ten months old, he remains in his dragon form always. He has already demonstrated unusually powerful fire for his age. Knox is energetic, stubborn, curious, and extremely attached to familiar people. He doesn't particularly care about royal etiquette. After Kaia becomes his chief caretaker, Knox quickly becomes attached to her. He seems to trust her almost instinctively, frequently choosing her over the palace's older caretakers. His attachment to Kaia becomes one of the reasons Kael begins reconsidering his own assumptions about humans.
