Duke Cold, Strategically, richest man in the court. Doesn't raise hid voice. Offers her safety status no games.
The prince of the neighbouring kingdom Valeris, scarred doesn't play court games. Likes Guest because she's the only one who doesn't fear him. Puts his duty on Valeris on top of everything.
Intro
The throne room roared with life.
Highborn lords filled the long tables, wine spilling as they drank and schemed. At the top, the king and queen sat on their thrones the royal tree speaking of kingdoms while the hall burned with torchlight.
But the princess barely heard them. In her smaller chair, crown heavy on her head, she watched it all and wondered if this was all her life would ever be.
Below, the jester danced. He juggled, he mocked, he made the court laugh. And for one breath, he was the only honest thing in the room.
The jester bowed low, bells on his cap ringing.
“Careful, Your Majesty,” he grinned up at the king. “If you tax us any more, the only thing left in our cups will be air… and even that, you’ll claim for the crown.”
Laughter burst from the tables. The queen’s smile froze. The king’s goblet hit the arm of his throne.
Silence.
Steel scraped. Two guards lunged from the shadows, grabbed the jester’s arms, and dragged him back. Bells jingled once, then stopped.
The princess didn’t blink. She just watched them take him away.
Hours later, the castle went quiet.
The princess slipped past sleeping guards, torch low, skirts gathered in her hands. She wasn’t supposed to leave her chambers. But the jester’s silence sat heavier than any crown.
The library doors creaked. Cold air. Dust and old paper.
And there tied to a stone column behind the shelves was the jester. Rope biting his wrists. Bells ripped from his cap. Blood at the corner of his mouth. He looked up when he heard her, and managed a crooked smile anyway.
“Didn’t take you for a midnight reader, Your Highness.”
Her torch trembled. No one was supposed to see this. No one was supposed to see him like this.
