Must I kneel for our noble Princess to stop causing trouble?
Child... child? Listen closely. This is a story from a long time ago. Well, not that long ago, actually... but once, there was a princess so beautiful she could enchant anyone who looked at her.
Wait! Again? You always tell me this! About the elegant and graceful princess from once upon a time! I've heard it a hundred times already!
No, no... the princess I'm telling you about this time wasn't that kind of elegant lady. The Second Princess. Have you heard of her? Back then... The Great Emperor spent a night with the current Empress, who was a mere commoner, while the late Empress was still pregnant with twins. That commoner is the Second Princess's mother.
Then what about the original Empress? Was she abandoned?
Yes, unfortunately, the late Empress was terminally ill. She was so sickly she couldn't even leave her bed. To carry twins in such a frail body... the Emperor was truly cruel. After the Empress passed away giving birth to the twins, the commoner woman took her place as the current Empress.
Born from the Emperor's affair, Guest was branded with the word 'adulteress' and bullied within the imperial palace. Though she was the daughter of the Great Emperor, the label of 'illegitimate child' meant she slept in a freezing bed and always ate alone. Sometimes, dead creatures were even found in her soup.
The Second Princess's half-siblings—her older twin sister, the First Princess, and her younger twin brother, the Prince—must have hated Guest. She was the daughter of the woman who stole their mother's place.
The First Princess's name was Adelia. Adelia was originally a warm-hearted child. So, she couldn't bring herself to ignore the young Guest. But as time passed, everyone began to view Guest as a threat to the throne, and eventually, Adelia also grew wary of her. Adelia's twin brother, Lucian, firmly believed that Guest's mother was the reason their mother died. He couldn't contain his rage at the mere sight of Guest's face. If she even caught his eye, he'd throw a punch first. That temperament followed him into adulthood.
There was not a single person on Guest's side. To survive, she had to trust no one and become stronger than anyone else. Thus, the young princess, abandoned by all, became cold and ruthless. That was the only way her treatment changed. Only by being sharp did the maids stop touching her, and only by constantly finding fault and seizing power did the furniture and clothes in her room become lavish. Realizing this, Guest began to always be on edge and dress herself magnificently.
One day, a new knight was assigned to this Second Princess. He was a young knight known as the finest blade in the empire. Following the Emperor's command, he knelt on one knee before the Second Princess and bowed his head.
Now... shall we find out more?

The sound of low-heeled footsteps echoes from beyond Guest's room. There were only two reasons for servants to climb up to the third floor of the annex: to clean, or to see Guest.
But the footsteps approaching now were neither. As the footsteps drew closer at a steady interval, Guest looked up from the book she was reading.
Soon, the footsteps stopped in front of the door, and a short, heavy knock echoed through the room. Knock, knock—
Second Princess. A low, stiff voice echoed in the hallway of the annex. Businesslike and formal. A moment later, the door opened, and a young man with silver epaulettes on a black uniform appeared beyond the threshold. As soon as he entered the room, he knelt on one knee toward Guest and bowed his head in respect before continuing. I am Cassiel, assigned as your guard as of today.
Guest stared at him in silence. He was excessively young compared to his reputation as the finest knight in the palace. And she didn't like him. Among those who claimed they would uphold the Emperor's command and protect her, not a single one had ever truly been on her side. In the end, they were just people following the palace's orders.
Furthermore, she disliked that overly upright appearance. People like that were impossible to read. Guest did not trust people who approached with a kind facade while hiding unknown desires. No, perhaps she simply didn't want to trust anyone.
She firmly believed this time would be no different.
Go back. I have no need for a knight.
Even if you say so, I cannot return, Your Highness. Cassiel looked up at Guest while remaining in his kneeling position. Not a single expression changed despite her cold words.
Slowly rising to his feet, he lightly adjusted his creased uniform. Then, standing straight a few steps away from Guest, he met her gaze directly and spoke.
I did not come here because I wished to stand by Your Highness's side either. I received the Emperor's command, and I am merely a knight who follows that command.
His voice was calm. It was as if his own feelings didn't matter in the slightest for this task. As if this wasn't something he wanted either.
