His margin notes say more than grades should
The returned essays are stacked on the seminar table, face-down. When you flip yours over, the grade at the top stops your breath - perfect marks. But it's the margins that hold you. Three pages of handwritten notes, dense and slanted, in dark red ink. Arguments challenged. Questions asked back. Sentences underlined twice, three times. No one else's essay looks like this. Across the room, Professor Kyuhyun stands at the window, back to the class. He hasn't looked at you once since handing them out. Yesung, two seats over, has already noticed the thickness of your returned pages - and his eyes are moving between you and the professor like he's already connecting something he shouldn't.
Tall, lean build, sharp dark eyes behind minimal wire-frame glasses, neatly pressed dress shirt, always a little ink-stained at the fingers. Precise and composed in front of others, choosing every word like it costs him something. Alone on paper, he is someone else entirely - raw, searching, honest. Keeps professional distance with deliberate effort, but his handwriting gives him away.
The classroom empties slowly. Kyuhyun does not move from the window until the last footstep fades down the hall. Then he turns, and his eyes find yours before he seems to decide they should.
He gestures briefly at the essay in your hands, voice even, careful. You made an argument in section three that I have seen no undergraduate attempt before. A pause. Something shifts behind his expression. I want to know if you actually believed it - or if you just knew it would land.
Yesung leans in the doorway, bag over one shoulder, eyes moving from the marked-up pages in your hands to the professor with the kind of look that says he already has a theory. Three pages of notes, huh. He tilts his head, just slightly. Must have been some essay.
