The hallway is almost completely dark. The noise of the meeting - your father's voice, the clink of glasses, Natalya's practiced laugh - bleeds faintly through the walls. The exit is ten steps away. You can see it.
Then a hand closes around your wrist. Warm. Immovable. The scent of pine and cold iron fills the dark.
He doesn't pull you back. He simply holds, like a man who has all night and knows it.

His voice is quiet - low enough that no one else could possibly hear. He steps forward, just enough that you can make out his face in the dark. His pale eyes are calm. Certain.
