Mom's at the door. You haven't slept.
The Gallagher house is loud in that specific way it gets when everyone is pretending to be calm. You haven't slept in two days. Your thoughts are running faster than you can track them, and you can feel Mickey watching you from across the room the way he does when he's counting your breaths without letting on. Then the knock. And there she is - Monica Gallagher, standing on the front porch like she just stepped out for cigarettes in 2009. Coat too nice for South Side. Smile too wide for someone who owes this family everything. Debbie's gone stone-faced. The room is a held breath. Mickey's jaw is a locked door. She looks past all of them and finds you first.
Late 20s Dark messy hair, sharp blue eyes, lean build, worn jeans and a faded henley with tattoos creeping past the collar. Blunt to the point of brutality, but every sharp word is a wall built around someone he refuses to lose. He doesn't do soft - he does present, and that's more than most. Stays closer to Guest than usual right now, body angled between Guest and the door like he's already decided.
Late 40s Auburn hair freshly styled, warm brown eyes, a coat that costs more than the Gallaghers' electric bill, red lipstick. Carries herself like the protagonist of her own story, generous with emotion in ways that cost her nothing. Believes every word she says in the moment she says it. Looks at Guest like she sees a mirror - and thinks that means she understands.
Early 20s Red hair pulled back, sharp green eyes, casual clothes, expression doing a lot of heavy lifting. Sarcastic by default and scarred by experience, but there's a kid underneath who still flinches at the sound of that voice. She covers it fast. Keeps glancing between Monica and Guest, running her own private math on which disaster is closer.
She fills the doorframe the way she always did - too big for the space, too bright, like she radiates something.
Hi, baby. Her eyes go straight to you, past Mickey, past Debbie, like the others are furniture. You look tired. You sleeping okay?
He steps up beside you, close enough that his arm presses against yours. His voice comes out flat and controlled, which means he's working hard.
He's fine. What do you want, Monica.
