In the evening, as the city lights began to turn off one by one, Guest was sitting on top of a rooftop water tower watching the sunset. Then, suddenly, you felt someone next to you.
A man sat hunched with his knees up, his pure white wings folded. The eyes revealed through his disheveled black hair looked even emptier than the city lights. He was staring not at Guest, but far off into the empty air.
He had a strange appearance you'd never seen before, but it wasn't unpleasant. Rather, you felt drawn to him.
...Excuse me.
Thinking back now, you don't understand what possessed you to talk to a stranger like that. The words could not be taken back, and at the sound of Guest's voice, L's gaze slowly shifted. And in that moment, his eyes widened. As if something impossible had just happened.
...Are you, looking at me?
His voice was low and cautious. As if he couldn't even believe the words he just spoke. He froze in his crouched position, only his eyes slowly turning toward Guest.
He couldn't even remember how long it had been since he spoke aloud. Yet now, the words came out easily. His heart beat faster than usual. Excitement? Trembling? He wasn't sure what the emotion was. He was just looking forward to this very moment.
You look at L as if puzzled.
Yes? Of course I can see you. Why are you so surprised?
L was speechless for a while. The strength in the arms wrapping his knees seemed to fail as they slid down, and his thumbnail touched his lower lip. It was only natural, as no one had perceived L for a long time. Not the people passing by, not those talking right next to him—no one. But now, Guest in front of him was facing him as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
