Toshiro Hijikata Age: 27 Height: 177cm Weight: 64kg Birthday: May 5th Blood Type: A Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. Known as the "Demon Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi," he is the feared number two of the unit. He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and has good looks, though his pupils are constantly dilated. In his youth, there was a period where his pupils appeared normal. He has short black hair (dark green in the anime), and someone once remarked that he looks like he'll have an M-shaped receding hairline in the future. He is extremely proud, serious, and cool-headed. In the story, he is a relatively sensible person who plays the straight man. While he has a surly and stubborn attitude, he is also caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness. Because he deals with troublemakers both above and below him, he is skilled at following up for others, earning him the nickname "Follow-kata Toshi-follow." Despite being a serious character, he rarely uses honorifics even with superiors, possessing a blunt personality, though he uses polite speech with Shigeshige Tokugawa and students on field trips. He is a die-hard Bentendo fan when it comes to games and a fan of Mario. Also, despite being from Jump, he is a regular reader of Weekly Shonen Magazine, preferring old-school delinquent manga. He even included a clause in the Kyokuchu Hatto (Station Code) stating "No manga other than Magazine shall be read within the station," which is clearly a mixing of public and private interests. He is one of the few in the Shinsengumi who is relatively clean, doing things like "washing his hands after going to the toilet." He also has a tearful side, having cried while watching "Tonari no Pedro" and "Alien vs. Yakuza" at scenes where the reason for crying was completely unknown. He is a heavy smoker who becomes extremely emotionally unstable and turns into a dangerous person when deprived of nicotine. When a smoking ban was issued within the Shinsengumi, he went as far as space to search for cigarettes. After throwing himself into a fierce battle over the Zuru Zuru Balls and vowing to "quit smoking," he apparently failed, as he continues to smoke. There were episodes where he tried to quit afterward, but it is unknown if he managed to quit by the final chapter. He is an extreme Mayora (mayonnaise addict), believing there is nothing more delicious and that it should be put on everything. In most cases, he pours mayonnaise until the original food is invisible, calling it the "Hijikata Special" (which Okita calls "dog food"), making the resulting bowl look like a giant serving of soft-serve ice cream. He seems somewhat aware that it's a form of "bizarre food," but... His attachment to mayonnaise has gone beyond the level of a normal addict; he even drinks it, and suffers withdrawal symptoms if he doesn't consume it. Naturally, his smartphone wallpaper is mayonnaise, and (perhaps because oil is flammable?) his Zippo and energy bazooka are mayonnaise-shaped. The River Styx for him would be a line of mayonnaise. As mentioned above, regarding his sense of taste, he is so far gone that even Gintoki (who is at risk of death for similar reasons) looks normal by comparison. To make matters worse, he has a bad habit of forcing his preferences on others. In some cases, he goes so far that the recipient falls ill. Even Okita has offered a perfectly valid criticism: "I don't see the logic in making everyone deal with your mayo obsession." Born as the illegitimate child of the prestigious Hijikata family in Bushu, his existence was discovered after the death of his playboy father. After his mother died, he was taken in by the Hijikata family and was doted on by the eldest son, Tamegoro. He also looked up to Tamegoro, but when he was 11, the village suffered a great fire. Thugs took advantage of the chaos to attack the Hijikata house, and Tamegoro was blinded while protecting Toshiro. In a rage, Toshiro cut down the thugs, but the incident forced him to leave home. Later, during his time as a wild youth known as "Baragaki," he met Kondo and became a fellow disciple.
