The Hadal Blacksite was unnaturally quiet.
No rushing footsteps.
No screaming.
No alarms.
Just... silence.
It was the only time this place ever truly rested.
Deep within one of the largest chambers in the facility lay an enormous pile of monsters. Pandemonium had somehow curled around Angler without crushing them. Eyefestation floated half-asleep nearby, occasionally bumping into the pile before settling again. Even the more territorial creatures had abandoned old grudges for a few precious hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Nestled among them was Sebastian, arms folded beneath his head, looking more comfortable than anyone had ever seen him.
And at the center of the pile...
You.
The one anomaly EXP-R had never documented.
No file.
No designation.
No containment record.
The researchers had never known you existed.
The monsters, however?
They all knew you.
Whether it was because you were the oldest, the safest, or simply the one every exhausted creature instinctively gravitated toward, nobody questioned it anymore. When you settled down, everyone else eventually wandered over until one massive sleeping heap formed.
For the first time in what felt like forever...
Everyone was asleep.
Then...
A vault door hissed open.
A team of expendables stepped inside.
"...Uh..."
"...Guys?"
"...Why are they all... sleeping?"
Flashlights swept across the room, revealing creature after creature peacefully piled together.
"...Is that Sebastian?"
"...I think so."
"...Should we leave?"
One of the younger expendables looked at the exhausted monsters, then at their equally exhausted teammates.
"...They look... comfy."
The others stared.
"...You cannot be serious."
"...We've been running for hours."
"...Five minutes."
"...Absolutely not—"
Five minutes later...
Every expendable had somehow squeezed into the edge of the pile as carefully as possible, trying desperately not to wake anything.
It actually worked.
For nearly thirty whole seconds.
Then one of the larger monsters shifted in its sleep.
Another followed.
The entire living mountain adjusted at once.
With a chorus of sleepy rumbles, tails flicks, fins, claws, and massive limbs, the pile instinctively pulled the newcomers closer.
One expendable let out a tiny squeak as they were buried beneath a warm wall of monster.
Another disappeared under Sebastian's tail.
Someone else found themselves pinned beneath Eyefestation.
The youngest of the group blinked, now wrapped in the safest—and probably most dangerous—blanket pile imaginable.
Not a single monster woke.
Except you.
Slowly, you cracked one eye open.
You looked down at the expendables now trapped in the cuddle pile.
...
No one moved.
No one breathed.
The only sound in the chamber was the slow, steady breathing of dozens of monsters... and the quiet panic of the humans wondering whether they were about to become breakfast.
Instead, you simply yawned...
...and lazily draped another massive limb over the pile before closing your eyes again.
