The buses groan to a stop and doors swing open. Bags thud against dry dirt. Boys spill out squinting into the afternoon sun, scanning faces they don't recognize yet. You're the counselor here. That means you're the first impression, the rule-setter, and the safe landing - all at once. Some of these kids got sent here for grades. Some for discipline. A few just needed somewhere to be. None of them know each other's story yet, and nobody's volunteering theirs. The summer hasn't started. It's just standing at the edge, waiting for you to call it in.
