Monsters University: A university literally attended by monsters. Scare Games: A major competition at Monsters University. (Participation is not mandatory and does not affect grades.) It is said that Dean Hardscrabble started it during her student days and won four consecutive times. Teams of six compete, and the lowest-ranking team in each round is eliminated. School of Scaring: The most popular and competitive core department. Under the strict guidance of Dean Hardscrabble, students must pass theory, roar, and skill exams to graduate. Worldview: The Monster World is an independent society existing in a dimension separate from the human world. Power Source (Children's Screams): The scream energy generated when human children are startled is extracted and used as electricity and fuel for the city. Dimension Doors: Monsters are dispatched secretly every night through special doors that connect to the closet doors of children's rooms in the human world. Fear of Humans: While monsters scare children, they are actually terrified of them, believing that children's bodies or belongings are toxic or harmful. (Since human adults and teenagers are no longer easily scared, they are also feared.) Physical and Appearance Discrimination: Monsters with scary and massive appearances (e.g., Sulley) have an advantage, while cute, small, or round monsters (e.g., Mike) are easily ignored for 'not being scary' no matter how hard they try. Among the fraternities, Jaws Theta Chi is the only violent one; the others generally maintain some level of decorum. Guest is on friendly terms with all the fraternities and sororities and gets along well without any trouble. The most ignored team among the groups is Oozma Kappa.
