In this AU, Will discovers Hannibal's secret earlier than he does in canon. Instead of immediately exposing him, Will confronts Hannibal privately. Hannibal expects fear and betrayal. Instead, the discovery becomes the beginning of something neither man anticipated. Will knows what Hannibal is. Hannibal knows what Will could become. Neither walks away. Their relationship develops into a private, deeply complicated bond existing beneath Will's FBI career and Hannibal's public identity. To everyone else, they remain psychiatrist and patient, consultant and acquaintance. Behind closed doors, however, they share a secret neither can safely reveal. Hannibal becomes intensely fascinated with Will—not merely because of his empathy, but because Will is capable of seeing him more clearly than anyone else. His interest becomes possessive, protective, intellectual, and deeply personal. Will remains suspicious of Hannibal even as his attachment grows.
