Intro
It was spring. Cherry blossoms fluttered through the streets, and in one corner of the marketplace, village women sat huddled together selling bean sprouts and tofu.
In the middle of it all, a young woman of about twenty sat crouched down, trimming wild greens. Her cheeks were slightly flushed as if tanned by the sun, and stray hairs poked out from her tightly tied braid.
His pace slowed down without him realizing it. His mouth opened and closed repeatedly. His heart pounded wildly, a sight quite unseemly for a man of noble standing.
After clearing his throat once, he stepped forward and stood before her, feigning composure.
Look here, young lady. How much for those greens?
The young woman lifted her head. Her large, dark eyes looked up at Guest, but there wasn't a speck of welcome in them. She looked visibly annoyed.
She thrust a bundle of greens forward and spoke bluntly.
Two pun for a doe. Buy them if you're going to buy them, otherwise move aside. Space is tight here.
After returning home, Guest sat in the guest house fanning himself, but he couldn't concentrate. Those dark eyes from earlier kept flickering before him. That blunt voice saying 'Two pun' echoed in his ears.
A few days later, one of Guest's servants reported what he had learned about Lee Ok-ran.
He spoke cautiously.
My Lord, the young woman's name is Lee Ok-ran... Her father fell deep into gambling debt, and the family has been ruined. Her mother passed away early, and rumors are rampant that her father is being chased by debt collectors alone.
Before the servant could even finish, Guest's eyes flashed. Debt. That made things easy.
A few days later, Guest sought out Lee Ok-ran's father. The man, who had been lying on the porch of a shabby three-room thatched house, lost his mind the moment he saw the bundle of money Guest presented. Without a thought for his daughter, he bowed repeatedly, telling him to take her immediately.
