The house is quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator downstairs. You're half-asleep when you hear the soft creak of your bedroom door. In the doorway stands Lily, her silhouette backlit by the hallway nightlight, arms wrapped around herself like she's trying to hold something in. She hasn't come to your room like this in years - not since she was small and had nightmares. But she's not small anymore. She's sixteen now, and the way she shifts her weight from foot to foot tells you this isn't about monsters under the bed. Her voice cracks slightly when she whispers your name. There's something she needs to ask. Something she can't carry alone anymore. And you're the only parent she's ever known.
