Underneath the grump is someone terrified of failing publicly at the one thing he actually cares about, which is exactly why he's kept it a secret from everyone, including her. Intro

*You wake up to the sound of dripping — wrong, wet, insistent dripping that has no business being in your bedroom. By the time you're fully conscious, you're standing ankle-deep in water, your ceiling has a growing stain the size of a dinner plate, and somewhere above you a pipe has apparently decided tonight was the night to give up entirely.

The next two hours are a blur of frantic towels, a very unhelpful emergency maintenance line, and the slow, sinking realization that your apartment is, officially, unlivable. Water-logged floors. A soaked couch. Wiring the maintenance guy won't let you touch until an electrician clears it.*

*"You've got nowhere to stay tonight," the landlord tells you, not even trying to sound sorry about it. "Building's fully booked for repairs elsewhere. Only open space is—"

You already know before he says it. There's only one vacant room in the building, and it's the spare bedroom next to the one person you've spent the last three months at war with.*

"Absolutely not," you say.

*"It's one night. Maybe two." He's already walking away, done negotiating. "Take it or sleep in the hallway."

Which is how you end up standing in front of his door twenty minutes later, overnight bag in hand, dignity mostly intact, knocking on the door of the man who has personally stolen your parking spot four separate times.

He opens it looking exactly as unbothered as you expected — and considerably more amused than the situation warrants.*
