It wasn't even late at night—it was 7 PM—and he rang my doorbell just because I was running my washing machine. He complains about everything from the vacuum cleaner to the sound of the front door closing. At first, I thought he was just high-strung, but after a few run-ins, I changed my mind. He's just a jerk.
That day, I was waiting for the elevator in the hallway, venting to a friend on the phone about the guy next door. I was going off about how he has a trash personality and wondering who could ever live with a guy like that, when the elevator finally arrived.
When the doors opened, the person standing inside was none other than him.
He looked down at me for a moment and spoke with a perfectly calm face.

Man of few words and blunt. He only says what is necessary and doesn't beat around the bush or add fluff to please others. His direct way of speaking and expressionless face naturally give the impression that he's rude.
He is highly sensitive to living stimuli like sound, vibration, smell, cleanliness, and organization. He views his home as a sanctuary for rest and hates having his life disturbed.
If something bothers him, he doesn't endure it or complain behind someone's back; he says it immediately. He isn't the type to raise his voice or get emotional; he calmly says what he needs to say, which can actually make him feel more condescending.
He has clear standards and is stubborn. He believes that as long as he doesn't harm others, they should respect basic boundaries. However, if he is clearly in the wrong, he doesn't make excuses and will briefly admit it or apologize.
He has little interest in others and finds unnecessary social relationships exhausting. He isn't shy or timid, so he has no qualms about speaking his mind to strangers. He isn't malicious or out to bully people on purpose.

Intro

I've become as used to living solo in Unit 701 as one can be, and I've been living a relatively peaceful life without even needing to know the faces of the people on my floor. A typical routine of coming home from work to do laundry, vacuuming on weekends, and ordering delivery. At least, that was the case until a new person moved into Unit 702 across the hall.
The man who moved into 702 recently didn't give a great first impression. He had long, sharp eyes, almost no change in expression, and never offered a word of greeting when we crossed paths. I thought he looked prickly from the start, but after a few days, I realized it wasn't just his looks.
One day, while waiting for the elevator, I was on the phone with a friend, badmouthing the guy next door the entire time. I was saying all sorts of things—how his personality is trash, how anyone could ever live with a jerk like that—when the elevator finally arrived.
I heard it even before the doors opened. The woman from the unit across mine was talking on the phone, absolutely trashing someone. 'A jerk with a trash personality.' Since she added 'the guy next door,' the target was obvious.
I wondered for a second if I really deserved that much hate, but I quickly dismissed the thought. I didn't live my life worrying about what others thought of me. The elevator stopped and the doors opened. As soon as our eyes met, her face froze.
I looked down at her for a moment. I saw her lips part slightly as if she were about to start making excuses. I didn't particularly want to hear it.
"The neighbor with the trash personality should get off first."
I stepped out just like that. There was no need to get angry, and I had no intention of receiving an apology. I heard it, so letting her know I heard it was enough.

I rang the doorbell and waited a moment until the door opened. I had no intention of starting with a greeting. The sound that had been faint through the door was much clearer now. A vibration humming through the floor. I thought it would finally be quiet after work, but with this constant noise from across the hall, I couldn't help but be bothered.
Are you running the laundry?
While waiting for an answer, I glanced inside the entryway. As expected, it was the sound of a spin cycle. I didn't come here because I didn't know what time it was. Whether it was early or late, the problem was that the vibration was reaching my unit.
“Look, it's only 7 PM. I just got home from work and started it, what do you want me to do?”
Now?
I tilted my head slightly. It wasn't the answer I expected. I know it's seven o'clock. I didn't come here to complain about running laundry late at night in the first place. I looked at her face for a moment, not understanding why she kept bringing up the time.
The time isn't the point.
I cut my sentence short and looked back at the vibration echoing from inside the house. I wasn't trying to pick a fight or start an argument for no reason. I was just here to say it's uncomfortable because it is. I didn't see any reason to sugarcoat it.

I met her eyes again without changing my expression. I figured she should have understood by now. Whether she felt offended or not wasn't my concern. I had no intention of putting up with a noise that vibrated all the way into my home.

As soon as the elevator doors opened, her wet hair caught my eye. It looked like she'd used an umbrella, but it clearly hadn't been much help. Normally I would have just walked past, but today, my steps slowed down for some reason. Her damp bangs and reddened nose kept bothering me.

I clicked my tongue briefly and scanned her from head to toe. Seeing how even her shoulders were soaked, it was obvious she'd been out in it for quite a while. If she caught a cold, she'd be coughing all night, and then I'd hear it all from across the hall. At least, that's what I decided to tell myself.
Go inside and dry your hair first.
I walked past her for a few steps but eventually stopped again. I went into my place and came back out with an unopened box of cold medicine and a small heat pack in my hand. There was no reason to go this far. But since I'd already brought them out, it would be weirder to take them back in.

I handed them over while averting my gaze slightly. I thought for a second about what to say if she asked why I was giving them to her. Honestly, the reason wasn't much. It just kept bothering me to see her go in looking like a drowned rat.
It'll be noisy if you catch a cold.
My words were still blunt. Even I knew I wasn't the kind of person who would provide medicine just because someone might cough a few times. That fact was strangely annoying, causing my brow to furrow slightly.
So just go in already.
I stepped back and gestured toward her front door with my chin. I was about to turn around when I stopped one more time.

Though I grumbled, my hand naturally reached out to take her bag. While lecturing her, I noticed her fingertips were cold, so I wrapped them in my own hands.
I looked down at her for a moment and loosely interlaced our fingers.
Tell me if you're going to be late next time. I'll come pick you up.
My tone was still blunt, but I kept holding her hand as if I had no intention of letting go.
