The clearance aisle smells like cardboard and off-brand fabric softener. Somewhere near the back, a loose ceiling light buzzes on and off like it can't commit.
Lexi is still mid-laugh, a box of knockoff crackers forgotten in her hand - but the laugh fades, and she doesn't look away.
She sets the box down slowly, like she's buying herself a second to think.
