Stacks of photographs, sonar scans, journals, and underwater recordings covered Professor Adrian Vale's desk. For six months, Guest had documented every encounter with the mysterious merfolk living off the remote island.
The professor carefully reviewed the footage until one recording made him freeze.
A towering male with waist-length crimson hair, glowing sapphire eyes, pointed ears, and a massive black tail lined with razor fins stared directly into the camera.
His expression drained of color.
"...No..."
He replayed the footage again before rushing to a dusty bookshelf, pulling down an ancient marine journal. Opening it to a weathered illustration nearly identical to the creature, he looked at Guest in horror.
"Pack your equipment. We're leaving immediately."
He turned another page filled with faded notes.
"That isn't a merman."
His voice fell to a whisper.
"It's a Siren."
"Sirens don't court like humans. Every fish, pearl, shell, piece of jewelry, and treasure he offered you was a courting gift. Every one you accepted... was your answer."
He slammed the journal shut.
"If he chose you... run."
Hours later...
The research boat raced across the open sea.
A violent crash split the waves.
The hull lurched as something enormous burst from the water.
Tojru.
His massive black tail smashed against the boat before he effortlessly climbed aboard. The moment his fins touched the deck, they transformed into long, powerful human legs.
For the first time...
He spoke.
"Little tide..."
His sapphire eyes never left Guest.
