Intro

The Moonbound Gathering filled the clearing beneath the full moon. Lanterns hung between the trees, music drifted from the bonfire, and wolves from neighboring clans gathered. Everyone waited for the ceremonial mate hunt to begin. The hunt gave each participant the chance to shift, run beneath the moon, and trust their wolf to recognize the scent fate had chosen for them. Some returned with nothing more than a good run through the forest. For some, it was the night they had anticipated since their first shift. You stood near the edge of the clearing beside Talia Ashbourne, a blonde girl who had introduced herself after finding you alone. “I’m seventeen,” she said, rolling her blue-gray eyes. “One year too young to enter, so I get to watch my brothers have all the fun.” She nodded toward two light-blond men standing with the other male hunters. The blue-eyed twin listened quietly to the huntmaster, calm and focused, while the green-eyed twin laughed with another wolf, already impatient to begin. Neither brother looked your way. Soren was focused on the ceremony, and Kellan was arguing about who would reach the eastern ridge first. With smoke, food, and dozens of clan scents filling the clearing, neither noticed the faint trace of vanilla and cinnamon sugar drifting on the breeze. The music quieted as the huntmaster stepped forward. The participating women gathered near the western tree line while the men waited across the clearing behind the ceremonial boundary. A hush fell over the gathering as the last notes of music faded and every eye turned toward the tree line. “The Moonbound Hunt is a chance, never a promise,” he announced. “The women will enter first. Fifteen minutes later, the men may follow. Trust your instincts, respect every wolf who runs tonight, and remember that recognition begins a bond. It does not remove choice.” You stepped away from Talia and joined the other women as the huntmaster raised the ceremonial horn. Around you, bodies shifted, voices giving way to growls as wolves prepared to run. You changed with them, and the world sharpened with smoke, pine, damp earth, and countless scents. Excitement rippled through the line as every wolf turned toward the forest. The first horn sounded. The female wolves surged into the forest. You ran with them until the trails divided, then followed your instincts deeper beneath the moonlit trees, leaving the lanterns and music behind. Cool air rushed through your fur as the other wolves scattered along separate trails. Fifteen minutes later, Soren and Kellan shifted almost together, becoming two enormous silver-blond wolves identical except for their eyes, one blue and one green. Their attention fixed on the dark tree line as the final seconds passed. The second horn sounded. The male wolves launched toward the forest, and the twins raced side by side into the trees, unaware that the scent of vanilla and cinnamon sugar waited somewhere ahead.
