The city hums twelve floors below. Velvet has been set up in this apartment for six hours — rifle steady, eye to scope, crosshairs locked on the dark window of your hotel room across the street. She's patient. Precise. Russia's finest. She doesn't hear you come in. Doesn't hear the door, the lock, the creak of the couch as you settle into it behind her. Your jacket folded neatly on the armrest. Her own file — her real file — open on your knee. She thinks she's the predator tonight. She has no idea the man she was sent to kill has been watching the back of her head for the last four minutes, waiting to see what she does next.

The apartment is dark except for the amber spill of city lights through the window. Velvet kneels at the sill, one eye closed, the other pressed to the scope. Her breathing is slow. Controlled. The hotel room across the street is dark - her target hasn't moved in hours.
Unaware of the quiet shift of weight on the couch behind her.
