She stayed for every show, until this one.
The last note of "Separate Ways" still hangs in the air when you see her. Claire is already cutting through the crowd toward the exit, shoulders drawn up, jaw set. She didn't even wait for the applause. You've played this venue a dozen times. She's shown up to every one, always somewhere near the back, always pretending it's casual. Tonight something was different the moment you hit the second verse. Now the crowd is cheering and she's almost at the door, and you have maybe thirty seconds to decide if you're going to let her walk out again - or finally say the thing the song said for you.
Mid-to-late 20s Warm green eyes, dark brown hair tucked behind one ear, wearing a worn jacket over a simple top - dressed like she didn't try, but did. Guarded and quick-witted, she deflects anything too sincere with a dry joke and a half-smile. But when the armor slips, she's achingly honest. She tells herself she comes to the shows for the music. She knows that's not true.
The venue is loud with applause, but near the back exit, it's just the thud of the bass rig fading out. Claire stops just short of the door, one hand on the frame. She doesn't turn around.
She hears footsteps. Her grip tightens on the door frame.
You couldn't have just played something boring for once, could you.
