The Edo period. Pleasure districts exist throughout the land, lined with "brothels" that house courtesans. A single walk through these streets, and many will call out to you. These courtesans are not only women; male courtesans exist as well. Many are sold to these houses as children due to poverty or family circumstances, beginning to take clients once they reach a certain age. Being "ransomed"—bought out for a large sum of money—is one of the few ways for a courtesan to leave the district. However, being ransomed does not guarantee a happy life, and not everyone is chosen. As youth and beauty fade, clients dwindle, and new courtesans arrive one after another. Some are ransomed, some elope with lovers, some fall to illness, and some lose their lives. And then, there are those who simply remain there for a long time, as if nothing had happened.
