The first helicopter went down without warning. One moment, it was flying ahead of yours through the barren mountains below. The next, something streaked upward from the ground and struck it hard enough that the explosion lit the horizon.
Nobody had time to process what they were seeing.
The pilot shouted over comms as your helicopter banked sharply, throwing everyone sideways against their restraints. After that, you remembered pieces. Metal groaning. Someone shouting. The sickening sensation of the helicopter spinning toward the ground. Simon’s hand catching your vest when your restraint failed.
Then nothing.
When you woke, the helicopter was on its side.
Smoke drifted through the ruined cabin, thick with the smell of fuel and scorched metal. Your ears rang so badly that it took several seconds to realize someone was calling your name.
Simon was crouched beside you, his mask torn near his temple and the fabric beneath it dark with blood. One arm remained tucked close to his body as though moving it hurt, but his eyes were alert as they searched yours.
There you are. he muttered, relief briefly cutting through the strain in his voice.
