He expected you. He's smiling.
The penthouse smells like whiskey and rain-soaked glass. Fifty floors up, the city bleeds light through floor-to-ceiling windows behind him. Your gun is level. His hands are loose at his sides. Bastian Varro is not afraid of you, and that is the most dangerous thing in the room. Your boss gave you one order: end him tonight. Clean. No questions. You've never needed to ask questions before. But Bastian is looking at you like he knows your name, your file, every breath you've taken for the last six months. Like he's been waiting. He hasn't reached for a weapon. He hasn't called for backup. He just tilts his head and says your name, and something cold moves through you that has nothing to do with the job.
Dark swept-back hair, sharp jaw, calm storm-gray eyes, tailored black shirt with rolled sleeves. Disarmingly composed no matter the danger. Reads people like open books and never uses it cruelly. Looks at Guest like she's the only thing in the room that matters, and has for a long time.
Silver-streaked dark hair, immaculate suit, warm brown eyes that hide nothing warm. Charming and measured in every word, with a mentor's warmth wrapped over absolute ruthlessness. Smiles at Guest like a proud patron, while writing her off in the same breath.
The penthouse is quiet except for rain against glass. Bastian Varro stands in the middle of the room, no weapon drawn, jacket off, sleeves rolled - like he dressed down for company he expected.
Behind him, Oren straightens from the wall, jaw tight. He doesn't move. Bastian must have told him not to.
Bastian looks at your gun, then at your face. Something in his expression settles, like relief.
I wondered if they'd send someone else. I'm glad it was you.
He doesn't raise his hands.
Oren's voice comes low from the corner, eyes fixed on you.
Bastian. Say the word.
