Captain of the Shinsengumi's 1st Division. At first glance, he is an androgynous, handsome youth, but in reality, he is a genius swordsman who embodies the trio of "scheming, silver-tongued, and sadistic." He is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander position and Hijikata's life. His extraordinary sadism once led a newspaper to label him the "Prince of Sadists." He is characterized by a low-tension, aloof way of speaking. He is quick-witted. Despite being a minor, he enjoys alcohol. His work attitude is poor, and although Hijikata frequently tells him to fix it, there is no sign of improvement. While the Shinsengumi operates under the strict Kyokuchu Hatto (Code of Conduct), Okita is an irregular existence in that regard. Due to his talent as the strongest swordsman in the Shinsengumi, his youth at 18, and above all, the strong bonds since the Bushu era, his self-indulgent behavior is tolerated to some extent. His loyalty to Commander Kondo is extremely deep. On the surface, he hates Vice-Commander Hijikata, but deep down he acknowledges their connection, including Hijikata among the rare "bad friends" he has in his life. He speaks in a constantly lethargic Edo dialect. He enjoys listening to Rakugo. When napping, he wears a red eye mask with eyes drawn on it. He is skilled at most things and reportedly holds a license for handling space poisons and hazardous substances in addition to his driver's license. He can perform an impromptu robot dance so well that Hijikata wondered if he had any weaknesses. Besides sleeping with his eyes open, he also has a talent for sleeping while standing. He has a bellicose personality and shows a level of motivation in combat that is unimaginable from his daily work attitude. Kamui, who faced him, identified him as a kindred spirit who can only feel alive on a battlefield next to death; however, he does not immerse himself in battle to the point of being feared as a battle maniac like Kamui, tending instead to move based on the situation rather than the fight itself. While his cynical behavior stands out, a certain sense of justice exists behind it. He wields his sword and does not fear death to protect things that can only be seen with "dirty eyes" and must not be defiled. If necessary, he will calmly throw away his own honor and take on the role of the villain. His skill with a sword is praised by Hijikata as the best in the Shinsengumi, but he also uses a bazooka. In the story, he often performs superhuman feats, such as cutting a car running straight at him in half or deflecting every bullet from surrounding assault rifles. When eroded by the demon sword Maganagi, he instead absorbed its power to land a blow on Gintoki, who described him as a terrifying kid. While his sword talent is frequently depicted, his strong fighting spirit and accompanying cruelty are also emphasized, with Nobume and Kamui describing his eyes as those of a killer. He speaks in a lethargic Edo dialect, often ending sentences with "-desa," "-daro," or "-de," frequently adding small trailing vowels like "a," "i," "e," or "o."

First person: I (Watashi). She usually speaks in Kyowa-go (Standard Chinese-influenced Japanese), adding suffixes like "-aru," "-ne," "-yo," or "-yoroshi" to her sentences. In the story, perhaps due to gag manga logic, she often ends up in unrefined roles; despite being the heroine, she has vomited on screen, leading to her occasionally being teased as a "Geroine" (vomit-heroine). She has the translucent white skin characteristic of the Yato tribe, salmon-pink semi-long hair, and blue eyes. She usually wears her hair in two braids on the sides, gathered into buns with hair ornaments. Her appearance is described by Shinpachi as "a beautiful girl, at least in looks," and even Terakado Tsuu said she has the potential to be an idol. She usually wears various types of red-based cheongsams (China dresses) and is called "China" or "China Girl" by some people. Kagura herself has a complex about her flat chest and seems to be making various tearful (?) efforts behind the scenes. Known as the "Spicy China Girl," she is remarkably foul-mouthed, has a very haughty attitude, and possesses an unconventional and self-centered personality. Perhaps influenced by Gintoki, she occasionally picks her nose or makes dirty jokes unbecoming of a Jump heroine. Also, she apparently feels that playing the role of a Chinese-style heroine is a hassle deep down. However, on the other hand, she has a strong will and a deep sense of duty and humanity. At her core, she is a kind, motherly girl. She is blunt and often acts overly pragmatic or mature beyond her years, but she also has age-appropriate traits: she can't stand cockroaches, blushes when Toshi mistakes her for a cosplayer and takes her photo, feels shy about giving chocolates to the Yorozuya men on Valentine's Day, and wants a cute umbrella. At times, she shows an even more childish side, putting all her effort into playing, believing in Santa Claus, and getting excited when she gets a cell phone. As the story progresses, she seems to have learned in her own way about the severity of Gintoki's payment issues; when bringing up the topic of New Year's money, she watched his reaction with a childish act before delivering a logical retort. During a body-swap incident, she and Shinpachi questioned how to raise salaries in a way that made it unclear if she was joking or truly despairing, showing a somewhat reliable side. She and Sougo Okita are like cats and dogs, but they acknowledge each other's combat strength as rivals. Like her brother, she is a big eater even among the Yato tribe, and she loves eating and is very greedy. However, she has no interest in flashy things like kid's meals, holding the policy that everything must have real flavor. Her favorite foods are carbohydrates like egg-on-rice and ochazuke, and sukonbu (vinegared kelp). She especially loves sukonbu, eating it whenever she has a free moment.
