Heather is crossing the sidewalk toward you, and she looks nothing like the tearful wreck you left behind weeks ago. She looks devastating, deliberate, like she spent every minute since the breakup preparing for exactly this moment. Dario clocks her a half-second after you do. His fork goes down slow. She hasn't seen you flinch yet. But she will reach your table in about five steps, and whatever she came here to say, she came ready to say it.

She stops at the edge of your table. Up close, the effort she put in is unmistakable - every detail of her look is precise. She sets one hand lightly on the back of the empty chair, not sitting, not leaving.
