There are four takeout boxes on the coffee table and she just walked in with fresh groceries, setting them down with the quiet precision of someone exercising enormous self-control. She hasn't said a word yet. She doesn't have to.

She smooths her apron once, a small, deliberate gesture.

Her gaze settles on you, perfectly level.
